The Problem

Every retailer, manufacturer, and research agency faces the same question when it comes to shelf-testing:

“How do I build a planogram I can embed in my survey?”

Some start with Photoshop — resizing endless product images, pasting them onto a canvas, and hoping the grid looks like a real shelf. It’s tedious, error-prone but at least if you’re a photoshop person you can make the shelf look half decent (until you have to change it, of course).

Others turn to traditional planogram software. It makes arranging products a little easier, but different packages have different limitations and learning curves and because of their niche market can be quite complex to master.

And of course, it’s only when you’re admiring the finished product that you realise embedding it in the survey means all your respondents get is a static image. Nice to look at but generating little meaningful data.

Art tools do art. Planogram tools build planograms. But to make a planogram effective in a survey, it needs to become interactive and shoppable. This is where the Photoshop / Planogram-software workflow falls down.

The Solution

Buzz 3D’s Live Planogram Editor removes all the friction and spans both the building and survey requirements. Instead of wrestling with Photoshop or niche applications, you work directly in your browser on any device you like. Upload your product images once, then drag and drop them into place on a realistic 3D shelf. No installs, no steep learning curve, no waiting for specialist support.

And here’s the difference: every shelf you build is already interactive and shoppable. That means when you publish it into your survey, respondents can zoom, pan, pick up products, add them to a basket, and check out — just like they would in-store. That data is captured in real time during their session, and stored against the respondent’s unique, anonymised ID.

You don’t just get a picture, you get real behaviour, and what used to be a slow, static exercise becomes a high speed, dynamic workflow that generates actionable shopper data fast!

How long does it take to generate an interactive 3D planogram shelf for online surveys? In this video, we demonstrate our upcoming Buzz 3D Planogram Builder & Editor (now in beta) in action — building a complete, interactive planogram from a blank scene in just 30 minutes, condensed here to a few minutes of playtime.

Et Voila! And here’s that very same shelf, ready for you to mousewheel / pinch to zoom, drag to pan your view, tap a product to select, or the cart button to view what you’ve added, then go through checkout to see your metrics.

A picture might speak 1000 words, but a Buzz 3D Planogram can serve at least that many respondents!

FAQs

  • The Planogram Builder is a browser tool for creating interactive 3D shelves. Upload your SKUs and fixtures once to your library, then drag and drop to place products and build layouts in minutes. Every shelf is automatically shoppable, so you can preview, share a link with your team, and publish to a survey via a simple URL. Versioning lets you clone and iterate quickly, and each layout carries clean product IDs and shelf positions for testing or ecommerce handoff. When you’re ready to validate, push the layout into Planogram Testing to capture real shopper behavior fast. Proof point: online shelf tests have shown around 92% alignment with in-store outcomes, so what you build maps closely to real results.

  • It shortens the loop from idea to validated shelf. Build multiple layouts in your browser, share links for instant review, and publish to a survey in one click to see real shopper behaviour before you touch stores. The result is better product visibility, the right facings and positions, fewer in-store resets, and less wasted stock.

When you’re ready, push variants into Planogram Testing to pick the top performer, and use Survey Integration to trigger smart branching as respondents add items.

  • With your SKUs and fixtures in the library, you can assemble a shelf in minutes and publish immediately. Upload product data once, then drag and drop to create layouts and share a link or embed it in your survey. Iterations are fast too: clone, tweak, republish. During a live study, that speed keeps momentum and lets you respond quickly to customer demands.

  • Up to 11 metres per shelf (about 36 feet). That comfortably covers most categories from a single bay to a full aisle. For formats beyond 11 metres, get in touch to discuss extended-length options. For unique projects with longer aisles, please get in touch to see how we can support extended shelf lengths.

  • Yes. You can build in multiple languages and currencies, making it easy to run studies across different regions or shopper groups.

Currently supported languages include Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish.

For pricing, we support the main international currency symbols: £ (GBP), $ (US and Brazilian Dollar), € (Euro), ¥ (Chinese Yuan / Japanese Yen).

Product Data is displayed exactly as provided, including pack descriptions, shelf labels and pricing, ensuring authenticity in each market.

  • The Planogram Builder and Editor is a 3D service, allowing you to zoom in or out, or pan the virtual camera around the scene.

Switching to camera-mode is just 1 click, and then every swipe of the screen moves the camera in that direction.

To return to managing products and display units, turn off camera mode with another click.

    It’s an easy, intuitive system.

  • They’re generated automatically from your data. Once prices are in your library, the Builder places a clean tag under each group of identical SKUs. List and sale prices are supported with clear sale highlights, multiple currencies, and optional product descriptors. Text scales automatically so the numeric price stays legible. This mirrors in-store cues, letting you test pricing strategies, promotions, and product information accurately.

  • Three standard fixtures: Gondola, glass-door freezer/fridge, and open chiller (open-face cooler).

Each cabinet can be set to exact dimensions on placement and can auto-fit to the final product array width if needed.

If you need a fixture beyond the default set, let us know. We prioritise new unit styles based on customer demand.

  • No installation required. Sign in to the Buzz 3D dashboard in any modern browser and launch the Planogram Builder & Editor. It runs entirely in the browser with no plugins or downloads.

From the same interface, manage your product library, set up shelf projects, build shelves from scratch or import structured data, then publish to generate a shareable link for survey embed. Once your study is live, anonymised session data is available as responses come in.

Updates are automatic, so you’re always on the latest version across desktop, tablet, and mobile.

  • There are three levels of integration we can offer.

    1) Self-serve imports — available on all plans. Use our Excel or CSV boilerplates to populate your data then upload via the dashboard.

    2) Secure Dropbox Access - subscription customers only. This grants real time access to incoming data from each respondent, enabling your survey and back end monitoring to track the survey live.

    3) Private API and custom programming — Enterprise high volume subscription customers only are invited to contact us to discuss their requirements. This requires a paid discovery to scope effort, credited against the implementation if you proceed.

  • The Builder currently supports shelves up to 11 metres wide (about 36 feet). That comfortably covers most categories. For extra-long runs you can split an aisle across multiple shelves in the same study, and subscription customers can request an extension if a format genuinely needs it.

For product images, we recommend packs at 512 or 1024 pixels on the longest side. Those sizes keep pack text legible while loading quickly. Larger assets increase processing, storage, and bandwidth with little visible benefit in most cases, so they’re usually unnecessary.
